This book is about one work: the sculpture I don’t need you anymore, I’m into Carl Andre now (2010/2017) by Ann Cathrin November Høibo. Since completing her studies in 2010, Høibo has become a key figure in contemporary art in Norway. Textiles, in the form of found garments and hand-woven tapestries, are central to her work. With a starting point in a feminist perspective, this book explores the position of textiles as both a material and a tradition in visual art today, as well as how Høibo’s art often evades categorization: In the work in question, the textiles are combined with plastic, metal and a framed collage, such that the result is more a sculpture than a work of textile art. Material and materiality have long been neglected topics in art history, but here, the method is to follow the materials. By examining the various materials from which the sculpture is composed, layers of meaning are revealed. Through the choice of materials, a dialogue arises with Navajo blankets and with artists such as Hannah Ryggen, Else Marie Jakobsen, Carl Andre and Joseph Beuys. In the organization of the materials, the artist references art movements such as minimalism and conceptual art. By delving into this one work, the author shows how a conceptual approach can be effectively combined with a strong sense of materials. On a more general level, the book is also an investigation of how one can write about contemporary artworks that defy established categories.

Diese transmediale Studie eröffnet neue kulturwissenschaftliche Blickwinkel auf die Ästhetik des Rokoko und legt dabei besonderen Fokus auf das textile Kunsthandwerk. Am Beispiel von Tapisserien, Seidenwandbespannungen und Paravents bietet sie neue Perspektiven auf die plurale Autorschaft der Kunsthandwerker, die visuellen Wirkweisen der Raumausstattungen und das ambivalente Verhältnis zwischen Zünften, Manufakturen und Akademien im 18. Jahrhundert. Die drei reich bebilderten Teile zeigen anschaulich, wie Textilien Räume und Raumillusionen erschufen.

Women designers, many of them Jewish, played a decisive role in the development of Viennese modernity during the interwar period. This book presents new research on designers, photographers, journalists, and patrons who engaged with the prejudices of the time and created new visual languages in order to make careers for themselves. At the same time, they contributed to critical discourse about the emancipation of women.

Lace Narratives: A monograph, 2005 – 2015 documents Cecilia Heffer’s innovative lace-making practice over a decade, including major exhibitions and commissions. This publication examines ways that Cecilia’s research practice responds to changing ideas and technologies as a means to extend our perception of textiles. It presents an in-depth reflection on studio practice in a discursive spirit, responding to the question: What has the studio enquiry revealed that could not have been revealed through other modes of research? 1The publication is composed of a digital edition of the book, along with a seven-minute video documenting Cecilia creating the lace-work Drawn Threads. A print-on-demand version of the book in either hard cover or paperback is available for purchase.Additionally, a limited edition artist’s book with lace samples bound into the pages will be publicly available through selected libraries and museums, including the UTS Library.Through these different components, the audience can watch Cecilia’s lace-making innovations in the documentary video, read critical reflections on her research and creative process, and handle lace samples. This combination affords a holistic understanding of Cecilia’s practice-led research and material output. This is an experimental publication model conceived by Zoë Sadokierski for the MediaObject book series and produced with support from the UTS Library.

Things – and even more so clothes and fabrics – possess a further way of being, a sort of cavity in which traces and footprints remain of those who use them, have used them or created them, have desired or chosen them. In addition, in their space, we find our ability to give word to their presence and ours. Clothes possess the particular ability of taking us into the world scene with our body, of getting us out of a condition of disappearance, subtraction or naked intimacy. This text recovers the poetic sense of our bonds with an original feeling that lies in the experience of the body, its symbolic values, the strength and voice of our bonds with the garments and the fabrics of the world. Clothes, from everyday objects, become world again when we learn to glimpse in them the chance of recognizing ourselves, of awakening their history and ours, of retracing and interweaving those subtle threads that allow us to speak the language of belongings. The voices in this plural text are placed within a large and durable research facility that is part of a philosophical approach to the experience aesthetics and the poetic-metaphorical aspect of existence. This book is aimed at those who have already tried or want to try to subtract things from their apparent silence, going through new educational sentences, aimed at the history of ourselves as well as the history of others, going through an everyday life pedagogy that can’t wait to have a voice, in order to create horizons of meaning that dress up and dress us up with intimacy when we realize that we know how to give - and live - new space to what is next, so close that it becomes - sometimes - invisible.
